Bansko Travel and medical insurance

We never hope for the worst. And yet, we know that sometimes, well... things just happen. As unpleasant as it may seem to consider, you could fall ill or have an accident, you could have your bags or money stolen, you could be forced to cancel or cut short your trip because of an injury or illness. That is why it's really important to be prepared. Anytime you set out on an international vacation, be prepared with the appropriate medical and travel insurance and information on what to do in the unfortunate possibility that something goes wrong.

Medical Insurance on the Bansko Slopes

Relax, just like Western European resorts, medical insurance in available for purchase with your lift pass if you have forgotten to obtain medical insurance before leaving home.

Services on the same level as the locals

As a member of the European Union, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is also valid in Bulgaria. In general this card, which you should order while still at home, is not a substitute for medical insurance. Instead, the EHIC provides you access to the same standard and price of medical services as those of local residents of the EU country you are visiting. But be warned! In serious cases, the EHIC program does not cover the cost of transportation back to your home country or long-term treatment. Nor does it cover treatment of non-emergency conditions. This is where additional medical and travel insurance is a must.

Travel Insured

The simplest way to obtain your travel medical insurance is to ask your travel agent to arrange it when booking your trip. For a nominal fee of as little as a pound a day, you will have the peace of mind in knowing that if something happens, you are covered. Low-cost airlines such as EasyJet also offer travel insurance when booking your flight. This type of insurance is for problems such as missed flights and lost baggage, while not mandatory, nor as vital as medical insurance, this may also be a good idea to consider. Your travel agent will be able to advise you on the option that fits your personal needs.

Medically speaking

For the most part, treatment facilities in Bulgarian hospitals have improved in the past decade. Nevertheless, if compared to the standards in your home country, you will likely find that Bulgarian health care facilities are basic and old-fashioned. The skills and abilities of staff are of an acceptable, professional standard, but due to economics, some specialised equipment or treatment methods may not be available and outside of Sofia, hospital staff may not speak English.
