About Bansko

How many reasons do you need to visit Bansko?

Bansko old town sights

Bansko's reputation is growing rapidly

With each passing day, Bansko's popularity as a ski resort destination is gaining. Granted - Bulgaria, long known for its sandy beaches and its lively music, has not always been the first place that skiers imagine when they think of a great get-away.  But these days, Bulgaria and Bansko ski have become new destinations of choice for skiers looking for a great time at a price they can afford.

A get-away you can truly afford

A Bulgarian vacation brings to mind charter flights, inexpensive lodging and great food. There are charter operators that operate to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, from most major European cities. From Sofia it takes about two hours to reach Bansko by car or bus. Because of Sofia's current popularity as a great get-away destination, flights are inexpensive and can sometimes even prove to be a good deal cheaper than packing the car and driving to a closer ski slope! And with budget airlines starting to operate on Bulgarian routes, getting to Bulgaria is getting even easier and even cheaper...

World class skiing

The mountains in the south and east of Bulgaria rise to heights of more than 2,600 meters -comparable to some of the ranges in the French Alps! Bansko weather conditions are mild compared to other popular ski locations and the winds aren't as biting as they can be further to the west. There are ski runs for skiers with basic and advanced skills and infrastructure that rivals anything in the Alps. Bansko ski also has off piste skiing and a 14 km continuous run which leads you back to town after a day skiing on the slopes.

Development with history to back it up: Bansko tradition in the face of change

Unlike many of the newer, modern resorts in the Western Alps, Bulgarian ski villages have a history which dates back hundreds of years. Stone churches dating from the Turkish occupation dominate ski villages and add a touch of culture in a modern, trendy environment. Wooden houses resembling those in the high Swiss Alps provide a great backdrop to an already picturesque setting and stand side by side with modern ski lodgings - the best of both worlds. Bansko is a particularly good example of this kind of traditional village and ski resort in one. A real Bulgarian town and a world class resort - a combination that somehow just makes sense.
